It’s finally the long awaited holiday season, and with the holiday season come gifts, family, good food, snow days, stress, etc. You get the point.

What the holidays most importantly bring is happiness, and that is exactly the feeling in the air during the gift exchange between the Spring Lake Alt. Ed. students and the Liberty Woods SeniorHousing residents while exchanging gifts and partaking in conversation.

Every year the students at the Alternative Education building get the opportunity to take part in a gift exchange with the residents at Liberty woods.
They get to take a trip there to exchange gifts and enjoy lunch with one another. The gift exchange consists of the students making homemade cards and homemade cookies for those they would be visiting at the retirement community.

In return, the residents at Liberty Woods gifted the Spring Lake students with homemade blankets, books, and some clothing items that were on their wish list.

The event made quite the positive impact on students, especially Spring Lake’s Marissa Brown. Marissa said, “I felt like I made a difference. We are all very aware that their lives may not be as eventful as they once were. Being able to go over there and spend time with them, laughing and loving was just incredible.”

Throughout the years, the partnership with Liberty Woods has given so much to the Alt. Ed., so events like this are important to the students to keep as a tradition.

Ebelena Poort, a student who attends Spring Lake’s Alt. Ed. states, “They give so much to the Alt Ed; It feels necessary that we give back. They are like grandparents to us, and treat us like their grandchildren. We share a strong bond.”

Over time, the relationship between the Liberty Woods members and Alt. Ed. students has definitely grown in ways unimaginable. Being able to participate in such events, especially ones that bring such joy to both sides, will be something the students will always remember.
