The Spring Lake wrestling team made the trip to Grand Rapids on December 9, for the annual Forest Hills Eastern Invitational wrestling tournament. The tournament included teams from all over the west side, including Forest Hills Eastern and Northern, Northpointe Christian, and Muskegon.

The Lakers, who hadn’t won a team tournament in six years looked to erase the streak and put the past behind them. That’s exactly what they did, capturing the tournament crown by having several wrestlers going undefeated on the day.

Senior standout Hunter Rose said of the win, “It feels amazing, and I think it shows that the wrestling program at Spring Lake is growing, and will be bigger than ever in the near future.”

The Lakers were led by many players who went undefeated over the course of the tournament, including senior standout Hunter Rose, senior Nathan Proctor, junior Jaime Holt, and freshman Jack Parker.

Each wrestler ended their day at 5-0.

Senior Hunter Rose said, “The whole team worked hard, and we got rewarded with the gold,” an honor that the team has missed out on in the past six years.

Other contributors were senior Noah Dennie who went 4-1.

With the four wrestlers leading the way and the rest of the team winning matches, the team was able to win their first team meet in six years.
Senior Noah Dennie said when asked about ending the streak, “It’s invigorating. We have all worked very hard to get here, and we’re going to continue to work hard as a team throughout the season to get to where we want to be.”

The Lakers will look to build on this past weekend’s historic victory when they head to Godwin Heights on Wednesday to take part in the Godwin Heights Jamboree.

The next home meet for the Lakers will be January 3, in the annual Spring Lake Wrestling Jamboree.
