The Spring Lake Schools Foundation’s annual fundraising event, the Shindig, became five years young this past Saturday, April 29. The general premise of the occasion is to raise money for certain areas in which Spring Lake Public Schools may benefit from the funds. The previous years have brought in close to $400,000, proving that the event is rather large and rather beneficial for the schools.

The fundraiser itself is given in the form of a party and several auctions, with past venues including places such as mass tents outside of VanderMill- a local restaurant and brewery located in Spring Lake.

This year the Shindig was held at the Spring Lake Country Club- inside, fortunately, as the weather was not very accommodating.

If the location and the auctions weren’t enough, then community members could be persuaded to buy tickets to experience the “libations” and “chow” that are present, along with music.

The Spring Lake Schools Foundation describes the event as a loose, community affair, saying, “Come casual and be prepared to have a blast.”

In addition to food, drinks, and music, the Shindig boasted a live, as well as a silent, auction for attendees to participate in.

This year it even offered an online auction, which stretched slightly before and after the event itself. A variety of items were available to be bid on, including Spring Lake apparel, jet skis, a weekend stay at Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel, or a set of college football tickets.

During the first year the Shindig was held in the name of math materials for fifth through twelfth grades. Since then it has raised money for K-12 nonfiction literature, science equipment, and more math for the elementary aged students of Spring Lake. This year, however, the proceeds will go to something that strays a bit outside of the norm that previous events have set: physical and health education, as well as school-wide athletic programs.

Spring Lake provides a variety of athletic opportunities for students, ranging from swimming to skiing, at all levels- varsity, JV, middle school, etc. The 2017 Shindig hoped to have raised over
$100,000 for the athletic department and the student athletes who participate in any sport and any level. This may seem like a very large sum, but this year’s event has a lot to live up to, considering that the 2016 fundraiser brought in over $110,000 for K-4 math curriculum.

In addition to the benefits it offers to the schools and the students of Spring Lake, the Shindig continues to be a notable way to bring the community together in a relaxed, fun environment. With five years already down, it is well on its way to becoming a Spring Lake tradition, and will be greatly anticipated in the years to come.
