A high school gymnasium (or parking lot) seems like an odd place to purchase a mattress. But for the past several years, the Spring Lake Athletics department has hosted a fundraiser that has made purchasing a mattress a popular activity for Tri-Cities residents.

Many buyers are looking to furnish a cabin or second home, while others are helping to get their kids established at college or university. Still others simply need a new mattress to replace one that has run its course.

Mattresses were available in all sizes, ranging from twin at just $159 to king or California king starting at $499. Shoppers could take advantage of a 10% off coupon, and faculty of Spring Lake were also given a 10% refund on their entire order.

Whatever the reason, prospective buyers were treated to a wide selection of mattresses and adjustable beds made by Beauty Rest. For those not needing a mattress, an assortment of pillows and sheets were also available.

The growing trend of selling mattresses as a way to generate money for the athletic program did not begin in Spring Lake, but it has seen widespread growth across West Michigan since 2005. Sponsored by Custom Fundraising Solutions (CFS), the mattress sale in Spring Lake was held on Saturday, May 22.

Originally, the mattress sale fundraiser in Spring Lake was run by the football program under the leadership of then-coach Mr. Jerry Rabideau. This year, however, girls’ cross country coach Mr. Aaron Andres assumed control, with proceeds from 2017 sales going to the cross country and track and field programs.

According to Coach Andres, the sale this year was a success. “We were able to sell 19 mattresses for a payout of $1,575 for the teams.” The proceeds will help the track and cross country teams to purchase uniforms or equipment in the future.

The event has become a staple of Spring Lake athletics in the spring, and many took advantage of the low prices.
