The Spring Lake girls’ soccer team is proving that, when it faces the toughest competition, it has the ability to shine. That fact was on display Wednesday night when, for the second time this season, the Lakers defeated a top-ranked Grand Rapids Catholic Central squad.

Spring Lake, on the strength of two late goals to seal the victory, came away with a 3-0 shutout of the Cougars, the second victory over their OK Blue Conference and state- honorable mention rivals in as many tries.

The first half proved to be a defensive contest, each team controlling the ball and protecting their goal. Head Coach Rebecca May praised her defense’s poise and relentless effort., particularly when getting back to defend a fast break.

Despite the defensive stalemate, Spring Lake was able to break the scoreless tie before halftime when Laney Peasley scored from the top of the box to put the Lakers up 1-0. That score would last through halftime and well into the second half.

Though it appeared the Lakers had control of the game, managing possession at midfield, there were tense moments during the game’s final twenty

minutes. At one point, goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde was forced to make a diving stop to keep Catholic Central off the board.

Moments later, with just seven minutes left in the game, junior Emily Batts created some separation between the two teams, scoring on an assist from teammate Peasley, making the score 2-0.

Three minutes later, with just 4:00 to play, Batts sealed the deal with her second goal, this time on an assist from Kaley George, to make the score 3-0. The Laker defense would make that score stand up, and the Lakers celebrated a season sweep of a very tough opponent.

The next action for the Lakers will be on May 12, when Spring Lake travels to Sparta for a 6:45 p.m. showdown with the Spartans.

District Tournament play should provide a good test for the young Laker team, as they hope to make a deep run into the 2017 state playoffs. Spring Lake will learn its District draw on May 11.
