There are few times that a community has the type of response that ours did to the news that Tegan Rose, a 5th grader in Spring Lake Intermediate School, was diagnosed with Leukemia.

The news brought a key family to the Spring Lake Community, a family with close ties to Spring Lake athletics, as well as the community as a whole, into the spotlight.

The community support for the family could not have been greater.

A multitude of events have been planned throughout the next month, most likely with more to come, to support the Rose family and Tegan through this challenge. At the high school, the office sells Team Tegan bracelets for $1 each, with the phrases T Strong and #teamtegan on them.

Hunter Rose, a junior at Spring Lake High School, who plays football and was a captain on the wrestling team this winter, has been appreciative of the support given by the community and the school. We are all Lakers and being able to be there for our fellow Laker is what makes us a community.

Several events are being held for Tegan. It all begins on May 6, with a Red and Gray duel, pitting Spring Lake’s wrestling alumni in some matches of old wrestlers to raise money for the Rose family, for treatment and transportation. It should be a fun event, as some of the best athletic talent in the school returns after being away from the mats for up to 20 years.

The current high school wrestlers and the youth program’s kids will also be wrestling that day, all to support Tegan and her family.

Also on May 6, Michigan Blood will host a blood drive at the Aquatic Center. From 2:00-8:00 p.m., donors can sign up and give blood! Tegan has a rare blood type and, for her treatments, Helen Devos Children’s Hospital has to import blood platelets from all around the state.

Old Boys Brewery and Jumping Java are sponsoring refreshments at the blood drive as well, so attendees can grab a quick bite!

The Red and Gray duel begins at 7:00 p.m.. Tegan has been involved in many sports, such as swimming, softball, and competitive cheer. Her father, Mike Rose, says, “She is doing very well, and she is just excited to get everyone together at a competitive event, because she loves to compete.”

No matter what someone is going through, community and love can help make each day a little better. During this tough time for the Rose family, our community has risen up and shown their support for Tegan. This is just the first step.

Let’s continue to support Tegan every day.  Remember, bracelets are only $1 in the office, and it only takes a few kind words to do your part. To Tegan and her family: We as a community support you 100%, all the time. We are all part of Team Tegan. #TStrong.
