The 2017 National Honor Society Induction Ceremony had a different flavor to it this year. No, it wasn’t the fact that a whopping 124 students were inducted into the NHS. It wasn’t the clever speeches delivered by the NHS officers. It wasn’t the sizable donation given to the Harbor Humane Society. The difference this year was the Cupcake Wars.

While NHS members and guests were enjoying the ceremony inside the auditorium, Spring Lake teachers Mrs. Jen Gwinnup, Mrs. Kathy Vandermeulen, Mr. Aaron Andres, and Mrs. Kelli Heavilin were busy setting up a treat outside the auditorium. The Cupcake Wars featured the talents of four interdisciplinary subjects, each one trying to make its mark on the competition.

Mrs. Gwinnup’s art classes designed the themed doghouse display and the decorations which accompanied each display.

Meanwhile, Mr. Andres’ tech class built the wooden displays upon which the cupcakes and artwork would rest.

The promotional side of the event was handled by Mrs. Kelli Heavilin’s marketing classes, which created press releases and voting tickets.

And the cupcakes themselves were made by Mrs. Vandermeulen’s Intro to Foods classes.

In the end, the winning display, the Dog Theme, was designed by Erika Ippel, and the 2nd hour Intro to Foods class made the cupcakes.
A total of 800 cupcakes were sold during the evening, and the event yielded nearly $500 in donations.
