The Tri-Cities Area’s top scholars were recognized by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation Tuesday night in the annual Excellence in Education dessert.

The event was held at the Spring Lake Country Club at 7:00 p.m. After brief opening remarks by GHACF Chairman Mr. Mark Kleist, the President of the GHACF, Mrs. Holly Johnson, addressed the crowd to welcome the students, parents, and their chosen educators. Administrators from Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and West Michigan Christian were also acknowledged.

Educational Initiatives Officer, Mrs. Kim McLaughlin, herself a former Spring Lake graduate, presented three scholarships on the evening, two of which were given to Spring Lake students. The E.V. Erickson Education Scholarship went to Jillian Huizenga, and one of two Mary E. Wilsberg Scholarships was awarded to Ana West.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Tim Terrentine, Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at Western Michigan. Mr. Terrentine spoke with passion for exactly ten minutes, during which time he addressed the gap faced by every student between their perceptions and what actually happens. Terrentine challenged students, who will not always have their support system around, to find ways to bridge that gap, to put on a show and beseige the world with an onslaught of positivity. Mr. Terrentine’s energy and passion were well-received by the attendees of the ceremony.

During the Recognition of Students and Educators, each honor student was called forward, along with an educator whom they invited to attend, to receive a certificate and a medallion which can be worn at graduation. Several students were selected to say a few words about their educator and what made them special.

Dessert and photo opportunities followed the evening’s festivities.
