Swinging their way into the new season, the varsity girls tennis team traveled to Hope College for their first tournament of the season. The girls started the tournament at 2:00 Saturday, March 25, and played until 10:15 that night. With the rainy weather, every girl played three matches indoors, sharing six courts with three other teams.

The Lakers battled against Zeeland East, who were the hosts of the tournament, Hamilton, and Reeths Puffer. Playing at 1 singles was Spring Lake’s lone junior, Erin Henderson. Erin came in third overall. After reflection over her playing, Erin said, “I felt good about how I played, even though I lost I didn’t go down without a fight.” In addition, Zeeland East’s first place winner for 1 singles shared that Erin was her toughest competition all day.

At 2 singles senior Francie Bailey fought hard and, after a tough loss on her first match, Francie said that consistency would be the thing she would focus on for the next two matches; “I made a lot of unforced errors I shouldn’t have made, and if I slow it down I should be good.” Francie focused on that as she continued to improve her game with the next two matches.
First-time singles player Carina Schubert came in third place for the 3 singles flight and looked solid the entire day. At 4 singles sophomore Jensen Hussey came in second place with a tough loss against Zeeland East in her last match of the day.

At 1 doubles team, seniors Anna Kramer and Kenzie Regualos came out on top, taking first place in their flight. With nerves running high at the beginning of the first match the team started to find their groove and became more comfortable with their play as the day wore on. No. 2 doubles seniors Annie Brechting and Taylor Hoffman, along with with 3 doubles seniors Sydney Prescott and Hannah Cabala, had a three way tie for 1st place.

Both teams fought their hearts out on the courts and experienced devastating losses on their last matches of the day. Finally, 4 doubles made up of senior Jo Ruter and sophomore Rachel Oostindie came in second place after they, too, experienced their only loss on their last match. Over all the girls tennis team took second place at the tournament.
