On September 28, the Spring Lake cross country teams traveled to Sparta for their second conference meet of the year at The Real OK Blue Jamboree. It was a dark, cool day with a misting rain, every runner’s dream. This weather was the icing on the cake for both Spring Lake boys’ and girls’ teams.
The Lakers tore up the course with their race along the looping course. Both teams had exceptional runs, securing a record number of 32 PRs (personal records) and many other SRs (seasonal records).
The girls’ team finished third out of seven teams with a total of 61 points. The top runners were Taylor Rebone, placing 8th with a PR run of 20:59.4; Maggie Cooper, placing 10th with a time of 21:02.7; and
Rose Henke, placing 11th with a PR run of 21:03.9.
The girls’ coach, Mr. Aaron Andres, was very excited about the his team’s performance saying that, “With each race we are learning a little more about who we are. It is going to set up for a fun and great last half of the season.”
The girls are closing in on their rival conference teams, their scores dropping with every meet that passes. Their coach is expecting them to soon rise above them all and take their rightful first place at the final conference meet on October 18, in Allendale.
The boys’ team finished fir
st out of seven teams with an astonishing 40 points. The top runners were Andrew Hylen, placing 3rd with a time of 16:29.2; Ben Hylen, placing 6th with a PR run of 16.55.2; and Matt Schmidt, placing 8th with a time of 17.25.4.
One of the boys’ team captains, senior Joe Negen, was very enthusiastic about the results saying he was, “really proud of everybody. I think we all ran really strong races,” adding that things are, “looking good for their conference championship hopes.”
If their Michigan State meet results, run two weeks prior, say anything, it’s that Coach Jen Gwinnup’s boys’ team will most definitely make a good showing at the conference meet.
