The Spring Lake boys’ lacrosse team has come a long way in its short history. The growth of the program was on display on May 10, when the Lakers hosted their rivals Grand Haven on Senior Night. Emotions were running high, and the game would not disappoint. Spring Lake was never able to fully put away the Bucs, but held on for a hard-fought 8-7 victory.
Spring Lake followed the leadership of senior Alec Palmer, who provided half of the Laker offense, scoring four of the team’s eight goals. Palmer credited his teammates and the game plan in his team’s victory. The two teams went back and forth, and the score was tied 2-2 after one quarter of play, 4-4 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Grand Haven scored to make it 5-4. That’s when Palmer took over, scoring three unanswered goals to give the Lakers a 7-5 lead, a lead it would not relish. Grand Haven, however, would not be counted out, managing to draw within one goal, only to have a shot ring off the goalpost in the game’s final seconds.
Also scoring for the Lakers was Chase Palmer, Alec’s twin brother, along with Josh Jaenicke, Justin Taylor, and C.J. Meyers. Owen Sherwood recorded two assists on the game, with senior Nathaniel Hentschel adding an assist of his own. Brand Verlinde was strong in net, recording ten saves on 17 shots.
